COL. ASTOR AND BRIDE AMONG THE PASSENGERS
---------------------
NOTABLE PASSENGERS TAKEN OFF THE TITANIC
---------------------
600 miles southeast of Halifax, more than a day's journey at her best speed
Capt. E. J. Smith is in command of the Titanic. He was in command of her sister ship, the Olympic, when the latter collided with the cruiser Hawk in the Solent last September.
The Canadian Pacific Steamship Company's Empress of Britain, which arrived at Liverpool today, reported having encountered an ice field one hundred miles in extent when three days out of Halifax.
The failure of the Titanic's wireless apparatus two hours after the accident was probably due to the flooding of the fire rooms and the stopping of the engines, as in the case of the Republic.
Under the existing admiralty laws of England no passenger ship is permited to carry gasoline or patrol in any quantity, and thereby is debarred from running auxiliary gasoline engines for the wireless apparatus. If the fire rooms were flooded the auxiliary steam engines that run the ship's dynamos and wireless apparatus would fall and there would be no means of furnishing power. This is probably what happened aboard the Titanic and accounts for the long delay in getting any word from the crippled liner.
It was reported at the White Star offices this afternoon that W. A. Dobbin, John Jacob Astor's private secretary, had received a Marconigram that Col. Astor and his bride were safe.
Gov. and Mrs. Dix had engaged passage on the Titanic and expected to sail for Europe on saturday.
The White Star liner Baltic was the ship that brought in the rescued passengers from the sinking steamship Republic, in January, 1909.
At that time the Baltic, summoned by the far-reaching wireless, started for the Republic, which had been rammed by the Florida on the morning of Jan. 23. She reached the two disabled steamers that evening and found that the passengers and crew had been taken from the sinking Republic by the Florida, which was badly damaged.
The passengers and crew of the Republic and the passengers of the Florida, 1,650 persons in all, were transferred at sea to the Baltic and she brought them in to New York.
J. G. Phillips, the wireless operator aboard the Titanic, was formerly employed in the same capacity aboard Jammu Gordon Bennett's yacht. He was olso wireless operator on several other vessels of the White Star fleet.
